Hyaluronic Acid and Micro-Botox Infusion Treatment

Aquagold is more than Microneedling

Aquagold is a painless alternative that infuses customized skin cocktails through just 20 microscopic needles made of 24K gold. Each of the hollow needles is smaller in diameter than a piece of hair, allowing the cocktail to penetrate the skin's surface. What's in these custom cocktails? A mix of hyaluronic acid filler, like Juvederm Ultra, and/or Botox which can be used to treat the face, neck, chest, or hands.

Benefits of Aquagold Micro-Channeling:

  • Static, non-moving wrinkles and creases will diminish.
  • Sweating in the nose and upper lip decreases.
  • Hypersecretion of the oil glands decreases, which also decreases acne breakouts.
  • Skin tightens and neck wrinkles are diminished because of all the muscles that pull down the face, mouth corners, and jawline start to relax so that other muscles that elevate the face can take over.
  • Pore size improves for better skin texture because of a decrease in the oil and sweat plugs that form blackheads.
  • Under-eye wrinkles that aren’t treatable by Botox due to laxed skin will still benefit from this treatment.

We Offer a Variety of Microneedling Options

Wrinkling, skin thinning, and sagging are caused by a lack of collagen, the skin’s most important structural protein. Collagen production starts to decline in our 30s, and once we reach our 50s, it slows to a crawl.

Collagen is an important substance in our skin because the more collagen you have, the firmer and tighter your skin will look. So, we’ve put together the two biggest collagen-boosting beauty treatments, which will enhance your collagen production synergistically!

Introducing Skinpen with Exosome Technology!

Exosome Regenerative Complex is an intensive dual-action complex formulated to absorb quickly into the skin delivering the concentrated power of 2.5 BILLION STEM CELL DERIVED EXOSOMES, POTENT GROWTH FACTORS, PEPTIDES, COENZYMES, MINERALS, AMINO ACIDS, and VITAMINS.

Benefits?

  • Reduction in the appearance of age-related pigment
  • Visibly firmer and more youthful skin
  • Reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Hydrates and nourishes skin
  • Promotes more radiant and even-toned complexion

Skinpen with Sculptra Boost, a combination of Microneedling and Sculptra!

Microneedling is a painless anti-aging treatment that pricks the skin with very fine needles, stimulating your body’s natural wound healing process to increase collagen production, and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Sculptra is a collagen stimulator that reduces wrinkles and folds, adds volume to thinning skin, and restores definition to the face. Usually, Sculptra is injected into the skin’s deep layers, but with Skinpen with Sculptra Boost, Sculptra can be applied topically like a serum.

This technique works because microneedling creates thousands of invisible micro channels into your skin, and when Sculptra is applied topically, the micro-channels allow your skin to absorb the Sculptra like a sponge.

Applying Sculptra in this way also allows it to penetrate into the outermost layers of the skin, where it can improve the appearance of fine lines, increase hydration, and give your skin a gorgeous glow.

Skinpen with Sculptra Boost is also great for treating lines around the eyes and mouth, acne scars, and improving the appearance of crepey skin.

Safe Microneedling Treatment

SkinPen® is the first FDA-cleared microneedling device.

What is Microneedling?

The microneedling process works by creating controlled micro-injuries that stimulate your body’s natural wound healing process, while minimizing cellular damage. The result is effective remodeling of scar tissue, while keeping the overall structure of the skin intact.

There are three phases to the wound-repair process:

Phase I: Inflammation. Piercing the skin triggers your immune system to disinfect the wounds, remove debris, increase blood flow and begin to create new tissue.

Phase II: Proliferation. The wound is rebuilt with new granulation cells, which are part of the extracellular matrix. Additionally, a new network of blood vessels develops.

Phase III: Remodeling. The wound is replaced with new dermal tissues and blood vessels.

Best of all, SkinPen works. Ninety percent of subjects in the clinical trial would recommend the procedure to family and friends.

What can I expect from the SkinPen® treatment?

A plan for optimal results. Your physician may recommend a course of procedures based on your individual goals. Maintenance of your procedure might require multiple treatments.

A comfortable procedure. Based on your needs, your physician will likely apply a topical numbing agent to the treatment area.

A short procedure time. The treatment will likely take about 30 minutes.

A mild sensation. Most patients report feeling only the slight vibration of SkinPen during the procedure.

Minimal post-procedure effects. The skin will appear slightly pink to red immediately post-procedure, similar to a mild to moderate sunburn. Additionally, the most common treatment responses experienced were dryness, rough skin, tightness, redness, itching, peeling, discomfort, tenderness, and burning. These conditions resolved over time without any further complications. Please see patient labeling for detailed safety information.

Soothing aftercare. Your clinician will provide Skinfuse® LIFT, a clean, non-cytotoxic hydrogel used to prevent the skin from drying out post-treatment.

An effective post-procedure protocol. Our team will recommend products and a treatment protocol that will help you achieve optimal results!

Peel away signs of chronic sun damage to reveal radiant, renewed skin with a chemical peel. Exposure to sun and wind naturally thickens the top of the skin adding lines and discoloration.

How does a chemical peel work?

Our clinic aesthetician uses a mild chemical solution to remove the very top layer of damaged skin cells. This process improves the texture and even color of the skin. It can help with acne, melasma, wrinkles and pigmentation from chronic sun damage. The precise formula used will be adjusted to meet each patient’s needs.

Having a Regular chemical peel may also stimulate new collagen production over time, help remove pre-cancerous skin growths, and even control acne. We welcome you to come in for a free consultation with our Clinical Aestheticians.

DiamondGlow Dermalinfusion technology is a completely unique, non-invasive skin perfecting procedure that has instant – and cumulative – results.

A potent but gentle 30 minute treatment, DiamondGlow requires absolutely no down time and is one of the few procedures in which skin shows immediate and noticeable improvement in volume, hydration, tone and texture. This patented technology is excellent for both light and dark skin, with virtually no restrictions on treating any area of the body!

This treatment exfoliates the damaged top layer while simultaneously infusing condition specific and anti-aging serums deep into the skin. Dermalinfused skin is multi-enhanced – hydrated, smoothed and volumized.

Benefits:

  • Exfoliation of the dry, dead skin cells that result in a dull, sallow complexion
  • Infusion of professional serums, developed to address specific skin conditions
  • Detoxifying lymphatic drainage – a type of gentle massage intended to encourage the natural drainage of the lymph, which carries waste products away from the tissues
  • Fuller, firmer skin by the volumizing effect DiamondGlow has on all Dermalinfused skin
  • Increased circulation by stimulating blood flow to the surface of the skin
  • Stimulated Collagen production from oxygenation and cell renewal

How does DiamondGlow Dermalinfusion work?

Four features of DiamondGlow work together to achieve Dermalinfusion:

Diamond exfoliation

  • DiamondGlow is the only treatment that uses real diamonds in its patented handpiece.
  • Diamond tip exfoliation delivers the ultimate skin-refining experience
  • Uniform, even and precise exfoliation
  • Dry, damaged top layer of skin is cleared

Targeted treatment delivery

Specialized Pro-Infusion Solutions are delivered to the base of the pores and the epidermis to address dark spots, acne, signs of aging, stretch marks, cellulite and dry skin Patented vacuum system ensures fluid is infused into skin, rather than merely sitting on top of skin

Deep pore cleansing

Vacuum pressure flushes pores with condition-specific Pro-Infusion Solutions, removing dirt and debris

Volumizing Hydration

All skin treated with DiamondGlow has 70% more volume – resulting in plumped, smooth skin– for up to 72 hours after the procedure

What does DiamondGlow treat?

  • Stretch marks
  • Acne
  • Dry Skin
  • Fine Lines and Wrinkles
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Melasma
  • Sun Damage

How DiamondGlow Compares to Microdermabrasion

Because Dermalinfusion is a unique technology, DiamondGlow is in a class by itself. Microdermabrasion simply exfoliates the dead skin cells and does not infuse treatment serums. DiamondGlow compares favorably to other available systems – which we call “wet microdermabrasion” – that provide exfoliation and attempt delivery of serums, but lack the close-looped vacuum system that makes DiaomdGlow Dermalinfusion so effective. Without Dermalinfusion technology, serums merely sit on top of the skin – they are not delivered to the base of the pore where they can help treat the condition being addressed. DiamondGlow is fully customizable with hand pieces, treatment tips, vacuum and flow adjustors, and serums specifically designed to address skin concerns and conditions; no other system offers this degree of customization.

Customized Facial

Love Dr. Cragun and the Helotes Office! A Doctor who cares about his patients!

E.M.

Expertise

The expertise and passion of the aesthetician you use for a facial is relevant for you to receive the ultimate benefits that a facial experience can provide.

A Dermatology San Antonio, we recommend a one-on-one consultation to touch on the important factors of your skin, your existing facial regimen and your goals for your skins appearance.

We want to discuss the amount of sun exposure, lifestyle, genetics, allergies and the external/internal medications can determine the product and techniques used in the facial. Not all people have the same skin type or the same needs to achieve the results that are desired, your facial is as custom as you are.

Your custom facial experience

To rejuvenate the skin, a gentle but thorough cleansing and exfoliation process will increase the product absorption and “jump start” the cell turnover. Extracting the congested pores, the application of a chemical peel or mask to kill the bacteria is a second step to further remove the layers of dead cells. Since there are a variety of chemicals and masks, the “customized facial” is designed for your unique skin type. The mask seals vitamins, minerals and healthy pure hydration into your skin.

Schedule a Consultation

The word “chemical” concerns clients for the fear of being raw and behind closed doors for an amount of time! There are so many different facial chemicals used and depending on the percentage and type, you may have a little flaking days after, but the epidermal “horny dead cells” are dissolved and removed during the facial treatment.

Why a facial?

  1. Accelerate exfoliation
  2. Forms new tissue
  3. Stimulate epidermal growth
  4. Increase reception of topical products
  5. Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
  6. Reduce hyperpigmentation
  7. Regulate oil production
  8. Increase cellular turnover
  9. Stimulate collagen production
  10. Brighten dull skin
  11. Improve tone and texture
  12. Improve acne scars

AFT Photorejuvenation (IPL)

Best dermatologist I've ever had....well taken care of...

V.M.

Expertise

AFT Photorejuvenation uses an intense light source to treat sunspots and redness. The best thing about it is there is no downtime or wound to heal making it the perfect “lunchtime” treatment. The trade off for no downtime is that it requires a series of treatments, from 2-6, depending on the severity of the condition.

Who can benefit from AFT Photorejuvenation?

Just about anyone can benefit from this treatment. AFT is beneficial for improving facial redness associated with Rosacea or chronic sun exposure, prominent blood vessels, unwanted hyper-pigmented (brown) areas and uneven discoloration of the skin due to the sun. It can be safely used to treat the hands, chest, neck, face, arms, legs, and back.

Depending on the condition, AFT Photorejuvenation treatments are repeated monthly for a limited time. There is minimal discomfort, and topical cream anesthetic can be used if one wishes. Each time treatment is done, the patient may leave the office a little pink, blotchy, or puffy. This blotchiness is usually gone in 1-2 hours, or sometimes longer. The use of makeup, sunscreens, or lotions is not interrupted. Your treatment will be administered by our experienced Clinical Aestheticians.

Have you been wondering about Laser Hair Removal services in San Antonio? Dermatology San Antonio can answer all your questions regarding Laser Hair Removal or any other services that you may be interested in.

Dermatology San Antonio’s Laser Hair Removal can take care of your unwanted hair

Many people in the San Antonio area deal with unwanted hair on their upper lip, chest, back, arms and just about any part of a body that hair can grow. Unwanted hair growth can be an annoying and sometimes an embarrassing situation.

Up until recent years, removal of unwanted hair was done by shaving, waxing, tweezing, and chemical depilatory creams, all of which are temporary, time consuming and often irritating to the skin. Some people have turned to electrolysis, which is a long-term hair reduction procedure, but it is also a very slow and painful process and may leave small marks and even scars.

Pain Free Hair Removal Service

Laser hair removal is a pain-free alternative to other methods of hair removal.Unlike other hair removal services, Laser Hair Removal offers a safe and lasting solution to unwanted hair, without all the pain and suffering caused by other procedures.

At Dermatology San Antonio, our aesthetician uses the LightSheer™ diode Laser by Lumenis™ for hair removal. This laser was selected by our practice due to its effectiveness and safety in various skin types. The LightSheer™ diode Laser offers permanent hair reduction. It requires a series of 4-6 treatments generally spaced every 6-8 weeks, after which you will live hair free, never having to deal with shaving, tweezing, or waxing again.

Wart Treatment

My visit with this office was amazing. They were very competent, very nice and very knowledgeable. I will definitely be back...

M.R.

Superb

Warts are benign (not cancerous) skin growths that appear when a virus infects the top layer of the skin. Warts can grow on any part of your body and are often skin-colored and feel rough, but they can be dark (brown or gray-black), flat, and smooth. Most warts are raised with a rough surface.

Different types of warts include:

  • Common warts – often appear on the hands, but can grow anywhere. Flat warts are generally found on the face and forehead. They are common in children. They are less common in teens, and rare in adults.
  • Genital warts (condyloma) – usually found on the genitals, in the pubic area, and in the area between the thighs. They can also appear inside the vagina and anal canal.
  • Plantar warts – found on the soles of the feet. They can be painful.
  • Subungual and periungual warts – appear under and around the fingernails or toenails.

Wart viruses are contagious. Warts can spread by contact with the wart or something that touched the wart.

Wart Treatments or to prevent warts from spreading, our Dermatologists recommend the following:

  • Do not pick, scratch, or shave over warts.
  • Wear flip-flops or pool shoes in public showers, locker rooms, and pool areas.
  • Do not touch someone’s wart.
  • Keep foot warts dry, as moisture tends to allow warts to spread.

Do you need a Wart Treatment?

Warts can go away without treatment. This is especially true when children get warts. Although most warts are harmless, dermatologists treat them because they can be symptomatic, embarrassing, or spread. Sometimes we biopsy a wart to make sure it is a wart and not a skin cancer like squamous cell carcinoma.

Call for a consultation if you cannot get rid of your warts with over the counter medications, the warts hurt, you have many warts, or the “wart” is rapidly growing (this may not be a wart). At Dermatology San Antonio we have many wart treatments, most of which can be administered during your office visit.

Mole Removal

My visit with this office was amazing. They were very competent, very nice and very knowledgeable. I will definitely be back...

M.R.

Caring

Moles are very common. The number of moles you have depends on your family history and sun exposure. Adults who have light skin and a lot of sun exposure often have more moles. There are several types of moles and each has a different appearance. Moles can appear anywhere on the skin, including the scalp, between the fingers and toes, on the soles and palms, and even under the nails. Most moles do not need to be removed. Normal moles can change in appearance over time. However, change can also be a warning sign for melanoma. Suspicious moles should be evaluated. These include moles that are “ugly ducklings” or look different than your other moles or moles that are changing in shape, color or size, itching, or bleeding. A board certified dermatologist is the best person to determine if a changing mole needs to be removed.

Patients with more than 50 moles or more than 6 dysplastic moles are at increased risk of melanoma and should have regular skin cancer screening.

Other reasons for mole removal include if it is irritated or catching with shaving, jewelry or clothing. Some people want a mole removal for cosmetic reasons. It is important to know that mole removal will leave a scar. This scar may be preferable to the mole depending on the mole size and location and method used to remove it. At Dermatology San Antonio our Board Certified Dermatologists and Diplomate of the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistant can assess your mole and discuss the pros and cons of different removal options with you. Some removal options can be done at the time of your consultation, but others will require a surgery appointment, which will be scheduled separately.

Skin Cancer

My visit with this office was amazing. They were very competent, very nice and very knowledgeable. I will definitely be back...

M.R.

Superb

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Current estimates are that one in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime. Fortunately, most skin cancers can be cured if detected early, so skin cancer screening and early detection are key. Dermatology San Antonio’s focus is on maintaining the health and integrity of your skin. We want to make sure that you are aware of your skin, and particularly of any changes that could be early warning signs of skin cancer. Let the best dermatologists in San Antonio monitor your skin for any changes and suggest treatment solutions.

The three most common types of skin cancers are:

Melanoma

Melanoma can occur on any skin surface. In men, it’s often found on the skin on the head, on the neck, or between the shoulders and the hips. In women, it’s often found on the skin on the lower legs or between the shoulders and the hips. Melanoma is less common in people with darker skin. When it does develop in people with darker skin, it’s usually found under the fingernails, under the toenails, on the palms of the hands, or on the soles of the feet. Melanoma can be deadly, but is curable with early detection and treatment. It is very important that you check in with a dermatologist about any new or suspicious mole. Most commonly melanoma will appear as a new mole or existing mole that is changing in shape, color or size. Melanomas often are asymmetric in color and shape and have varying shades of pink, brown, black or grey. They tend to change over time. Most start flat and gradually change, but some will arising quickly as a new pink or black -brown bump. Another way to spot melanoma is to look for an “ugly duckling” ie. a mole that looks different than your other moles. Please contact our office if you have a suspicious mole. People who are at higher risk for melanoma are patients who are redheads or have fair skin, have greater than 50 moles, have greater than 6 atypical moles, have a history of using tanning beds, have extensive freckling, have had blistering sunburns in childhood, have had multiple basal cell or squamous cell skin cancers, have a family or personal history of melanoma or a personal history of breast cancer, and those who work outdoors. These types of patients should be seen regularly by a dermatologist.

Basal cell skin cancer

This is the most common form of skin cancer. Basal cell skin cancer (BCC) usually occurs in areas of chronic sun exposure or areas that have been sunburned. The face and trunk are the most common places to find basal cell skin cancer. In people with fair skin, basal cell skin cancer is the most common type of skin cancer. Basal cell skin cancer generally arises as a pink to whitish (pearly) bump that gradually gets bigger. So look for “pimples” or “bug bites” that fail to go away. Basal cells can also scab and bleed with minimal trauma. So, any spot that bleeds when toweling off or on its own needs to be evaluated. Basal cell can also arise as a flat pink patch that does not go away. This is more common on the trunk and arms. Most basal cell skin cancers are pink but they can be pigmented in patients with darker skin and present with a brown to pink color. The good news about basal cell carcinoma is that it is extremely rare for it to spread. It generally stays confined to the skin but can get bigger and locally invasive if neglected. Again early detection is key. Those that should be screened include patients with a history of sunburns, chronic sun exposure, tanning bed use, a family history skin cancer, extensive freckling, fair complexion, or anyone with a suspicious lesion.

Squamous cell skin cancer

Squamous cell skin cancer (SCC) is the second most common form of skin cancer. In people with fair skin, squamous cell skin cancer usually occurs on parts of the skin that have had chronic sun exposure, such as the head, face, ears, arms, hands, chest and neck. In people with dark skin, squamous cell skin cancer is the most common type of skin cancer, and it’s usually found in places that are not in the sun, such as the legs or feet. Unlike basal cell carcinoma, most SCCs have a precursor lesion: an actinic keratosis(AK). We can reduce your risk of developing SCC by treating your AKs. AKs are pink, rough, scaly, crusted, or sensitive areas on the face, scalp, ears, arms, and hands that don’t go away. At Dermatology San Antonio we can offer you a variety of treatments to address these precursor lesions including liquid nitrogen, topical treatments, and light treatment.

For more information, view the BlueLight/PDT page.

SCC can arise gradually from AKs. This will look like a thickened, larger lesion than the other AKs. It can also arise like a BCC; a new pink bump, horn, or flat area that gradually gets bigger, scabs or bleeds. SCC can also arise very quickly as a rapidly growing pink bump. Please contact our office if you have any suspicious lesions. Although SCC generally stays localized to the skin they can rarely spread to other areas of the body so, again, early detection is key. SCC that are higher risk include those on the lip or ear, those within old scars, those arising in immunosuppressed patients, or those that are rapidly growing or painful. Patients who should be screened include those with a history of sunburns, chronic sun exposure, outdoor profession, tanning bed use, a family history skin cancer, extensive freckling, fair complexion, or anyone with a suspicious lesion. In addition, patients who have been treated with radiation therapy, have chronic scarring or lymphedema, or on immunosuppressive medications (like transplant patients) are also at increased risk.

Exposure to ultraviolet light, from the sun and indoor tanning devices, is the most preventable risk factor for skin cancer. That’s why it’s important to know the simple steps that you can take to protect yourself from skin cancer. To effectively guard the skin and detect skin cancer early, dermatologists recommend the following:

  1. Generously apply a broad spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30 to all exposed skin. On a cloudy day, up to 80 percent of the sun’s rays can pass through the clouds. So, use sunscreen even when cloudy.
  2. Throw away any old sunscreens. The FDA requires that all sunscreens retain their original strength for at least three years. Some sunscreens include an expiration date. If the sunscreen doesn’t have an expiration date, write the date of purchase on the bottle, that way you’ll know when to throw it out.
  3. Wear protective clothing, such as a long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
  4. Seek shade, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun’s rays are strongest.
  5. Use extra caution near water, snow and sand as they reflect the damaging rays of the sun. Sand reflects 25 percent of the sun’s rays.
  6. Get vitamin D safely through a healthy diet that may include vitamin supplements. Vitamin D is critical to healthy bones. The amount of vitamin D received from sun exposure is inconsistent. There is no known safe level of unprotected sun exposure.
  7. Avoid tanning beds. Ultraviolet light from the sun and tanning beds can cause skin cancer and wrinkling. If you want to look tan, consider using a self-tanning product, but continue to use sunscreen with it.
  8. Check your birthday suit on your birthday. If you notice anything changing, growing, or bleeding on your skin, see a dermatologist. Skin cancer is very treatable when caught early.

Hair & Nail Treatments

My visit with this office was amazing. They were very competent, very nice and very knowledgeable. I will definitely be back...

M.R.

Caring

D ermatologists are your hair and nail experts. When problems arise, we are here to help answer your questions and resolve your concerns.

Hair Loss

There are several types of hair loss, or alopecia, which your dermatologist can diagnose and treat. Sometimes a diagnosis can be made clinically and sometimes a biopsy is needed.

The most commons types of hair loss are:

  1. Alopecia Areata: Alopecia areata (AA) is a common autoimmune disease resulting in the loss of hair on the scalp or elsewhere on the body. It affects more than 6.5 million people in the US alone. It usually starts with one or more small round smooth patches of hair loss on the scalp. There are treatments available for AA. Please make an appointment with our dermatologists to determine what is right for you. For education and support, please visit the NAAF.
  2. Male and Female pattern hair loss: When hair loss is caused by hormones and genetics, it is called “balding.” Male pattern hair loss is characterized by a receding hairline and/or thinning on the front and top of the scalp. Female pattern hair loss is just as common and results in thinning on the top of the scalp but retention of the frontal hairline. Both are treatable.
  3. Discoid Lupus: Lupus is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in the skin and around the hair follicle. Discoid lupus usually presents as focal areas of hair loss with redness and scale. It is diagnosed with a skin biopsy. Discoid lupus can be associated with systemic lupus. Because these discoid lesions scar the hair follicles, they can cause permanent hair loss so early diagnosis and intervention is key.
  4. Telogen Effluvium: Telogen Effluvium (TE) is the second most common form of hair loss that dermatologists see. A normal hair cycle is when hairs grow, rest, fall out, then grow back again. TE happens when the number of hairs in the falling out stage dramatically increase, leading to significant shedding. This will result in thinner hair on the entire scalp. TE has a variety of triggers and generally resolves on its own. A dermatologist can help identify any triggers and make sure there is no other type of hair loss present.

Dermatology San Antonio offers PRP treatments to help stimulate hair regrowth, find out more on PRP for Hair Loss.

Nail Abnormalities

At San Antonio Dermatology, we’re nail specialists. We treat a variety of nail ailments, such as nail dystrophy. Nail dystrophy means a nail is abnormal. Abnormal nails can be caused by a variety of conditions, the most common being tinea (fungal infection), psoriasis and trauma. Nails can also become discolored. Nail discoloration has a variety of causes, but the most serious cause is skin cancer. Melanoma and SCC, as well as normal moles, can occur under the nail and should be monitored for potential mole removal.

At Dermatology San Antonio, we can evaluate your nails to determine the cause of dystrophy or discoloration to determine the appropriate treatment. Give us a call today at (210)-615-7171 to learn more about how we can help you with your hair or nail concerns.

Skin Allergy Testing

My visit with this office was amazing. They were very competent, very nice and very knowledgeable. I will definitely be back...

M.R.

Expertise

Patch testing is used to identify allergens that may be causing or contributing to dermatitis or contact dermatitis. Generally patch testing is used when a rash does not resolve with simple measures, persists despite treatment, flares unexpectedly, or involves a specific area that suggests contact dermatitis. Allergens are chemicals found in makeups, creams, topical medications, leather, clothing, shoes, work items, plants etc. that when in contact with the skin will cause rash or contact dermatitis for some individuals. A common example is nickel allergy. Nickel present in earrings and belt buckles can cause a chronic recurring rash on the belly or earlobe that will not resolve until nickel is avoided. Other common allergens that can cause dermatitis include fragrance, preservatives, rubber, leather, and botanicals. These agents can be more challenging to avoid.

There are two types of allergy testing: prick and patch. Prick testing is generally done by an allergist. It consists of pricking the skin and looking for a hive 20 minutes later. This type of testing is looking for allergens that cause or exacerbate hives, rhinitis or asthma symptoms when inhaled or ingested like cedar or peanuts. Patch testing is entirely different. Patch testing is looking at allergens that cause rash when in contact with the skin like nickel. Prick testing and Patch testing look at entirely different allergens.

Benefits of having a patch test for skin and allergy testing

Patch testing can be helpful for anyone with chronic dermatitis of unclear etiology. It is generally covered by insurance. Our office will confirm insurance coverage before scheduling your patch testing. When you visit the office the physician will consult with you about your dermatitis to determine if patch testing is appropriate. If patch testing is appropriate you will be scheduled on a Monday to have the patches placed on your back. At Dermatology San Antonio we use the North American Standard series to patch test which consists of a 70 of the most common allergens. The allergens are in vaseline or water and are placed on the back with stickers (patches). The patches remain in place for two days. You return on Wednesday to have the patches removed and to look for any reaction to the allergens. Lastly, you are seen two days later to read the test again. Rather than looking for hives in response to the allergen, we are looking for dermatitis. This can take days to develop, thus the Wednesday and Friday visit after the patches are placed on Monday.

What if I test positive on my skin and allergy test?

If you test positive to any allergens you will be counseled about how to avoid them and where they are found. For some people avoidance can lead to resolution of their dermatitis. For other patients, their dermatitis may improve but not resolve. There is no allergen therapy or desensitization therapy like there is with prick testing. For allergens that cause contact dermatitis there is simply awareness and avoidance. There are some patients who will have a negative test and for some patients we identify allergens that are not contributing to their current dermatitis. Patch testing does not determine if your rash is due to a medication you are ingesting.

Examples of patients that have benefited from patch testing:

  1. A patient with chronic eyelid dermatitis tests positive to components of nail polish and artificial nails. Her eyelid dermatitis resolves with avoidance.
  2. A patient with chronic dermatitis on the thighs tests positive to nickel. He stops putting his cellphone and keys in his pocket and the dermatitis resolves.
  3. A patient with facial dermatitis tests positive to a preservative found in cosmetics. Her facial dermatitis resolves with avoidance.
  4. A patient with chronic dermatitis on his lower legs tests positive to an allergen in leather. His dermatitis dramatically improves with switching to a different type of boot.
  5. A patient with chronic hand dermatitis tests positive to a preservative used in the hand soap at work. His hands improve with avoidance.
  6. A patient with generalized dermatitis tests positive to fragrance and preservatives. Her dermatitis improves with avoidance.
  7. A mom with hand dermatitis test positive to the preservative in wet wipes. Her hands improve with avoidance.
  8. If you have dermatitis that has not responded to treatment, is recurrent, or chronic and you are interested in patch testing please call our office for a consultation.

Eczema or dermatitis is an itchy rash. There are different types of eczema, such as irritant, allergic, stasis, nummular and atopic, to name a few.  Eczema can affect people of any age. Treating eczema is multifactorial and involves identifying the eczema, eliminating exacerbating factors, and treating the rash and itch. Improving your eczema starts with making an appointment with one of our physicians or physician assistant.

Patch testing can be helpful in certain types of eczema.  Patch testing is used to identify allergens that may be causing or contributing to dermatitis or contact dermatitis. Psoriasis Treatment for Better Skin

Psoriasis Treatment

My visit with this office was amazing. They were very competent, very nice and very knowledgeable. I will definitely be back...

M.R.

Caring

Psoriasis is commonly mistaken as nothing more than a “skin condition.” But it’s actually a chronic disease of the immune system that can affect the skin, joints, and increase your risk for heart disease and depression. While the exact cause of psoriasis is unknown, scientists believe it is rooted in immune dysregulation that leads to inflammation. When you have plaque psoriasis, the most common form of psoriasis, your immune system is overactive, initiating skin inflammation and causing skin cells to be produced much more quickly than normal. New skin cells are pushed to the skin’s surface every 3-4 days instead of the usual 28-30 days. This results in the red scaly plaques of psoriasis.

In addition to symptoms that appear on your skin, psoriasis can also affect your joints through a related condition called psoriatic arthritis. Tell your dermatologist about any pain, stiffness, or swelling you’ve experienced in and around your joints. We may refer you to a rheumatologist for evaluation. Patients with psoriasis are also at increased risk of heart disease, diabetes or metabolic syndrome, and depression. For patients with psoriasis it is important to have a primary care physician who can monitor and treat high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and depression.

Is there a cure for psoriasis?

While there’s currently no cure for psoriasis we have more treatment options today than we have ever had. Psoriasis medications aim to reduce the severity of symptoms by slowing the over-production of skin cells and reducing inflammation.

At Dermatology San Antonio we understand how psoriasis impacts your quality of life and well-being. We offer the full range of psoriasis treatments including topical creams, narrow band UVB light treatment, oral medications, and the newer injectable biologic medicines. The choice of treatment depends on the severity of your disease, the presence or absence of psoriatic arthritis, your preference and your other medical conditions. While not every treatment works on every patient, our Board Certified Dermatologists and Diplomate of the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistant will work with you to determine which psoriasis treatment is best for you.

Rosacea Treatment

My visit with this office was amazing. They were very competent, very nice and very knowledgeable. I will definitely be back...

Superb

Rosacea is a common skin disease that affects millions of Americans. It often appears after the age of 30 but can affect teens as well. It generally involves the face but can also affect the trunk. Although rosacea is more common in people with fair skin, it affects patients with all skin types. There are different types of rosacea and the symptoms vary from individual to individual. The most common types are:

  • Erythematotelangiectatic: Redness, flushing, visible blood vessels and sensitive skin.
  • Papulopustular: Redness, swelling, and acne-like breakouts.
  • Phymatous: Skin thickening.

Treatment for Rosacea

The cause of rosacea is uncertain but our understanding of the disease continues to grow. Our Board Certified Dermatologists and Diplomate of the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistant can offer proven plans and treatment to minimize and control the symptoms. Treatment of rosacea depends on your specific symptoms and subtype. In addition to topical and oral prescriptions, avoiding certain lifestyle factors (such as eating certain foods that can trigger rosacea flares) might be recommended. Laser treatments can also help reduce the redness caused by rosacea.

Acne Treatment for Better Skin

Acne

Best dermatologist I've ever had....well taken care of...

V.M.

Caring

Acne is the most common skin disorder in the United States, affecting 40 million to 50 million Americans. Acne usually begins at puberty, but is not restricted to any age group, as many adults experience acne in their 30s, 40s, and even 50s. Nearly 85 percent of all people have acne at some point in their lives. Adult women and teens are most commonly affected. Acne consists of pimples, deeper lumps (cysts or nodules), and plugged pores (blackheads and whiteheads), that occur on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders, and even the upper arms.

Acne is caused by the following major factors:

  1. Overproduction of oil by enlarged oil glands in the skin. This is influenced by hormones of puberty, ovulation, and stress.
  2. Blockage of the hair follicles that release oil. This manifests as the blackhead and whitehead that are the precursor lesions of all other acne lesions.
  3. Overgrowth of bacteria, called P. acnes, within the hair follicles that creates inflammatory molecules leading to the pustules and pimples of acne.
  4. All of the above can result in rupture of the hair follicle leading to the deeper cysts and nodules

Acne can have a significant impact on self-esteem and quality of life for teens and adults. For some individuals it can cause discoloration that takes months to resolve or scarring that is more permanent. Acne can lead to discoloration and permanent scarring. Dermatology San Antonio not only specializes in acne treatment, but we also offer options to treat what is left behind after the pimples fade.

“The best time to start is when blackheads and whiteheads first appear in adolescence”

Discoloration can be addressed with topical medications, chemical peels, and laser treatment. The more permanent scarring can be addressed with fillers, subcision, chemical peels, punch excision, microneedling, or laser resurfacing. Scar treatment depends on your specific type of scarring and your skin type. Acne scar treatment begins by making an apt with Dr. Miller, Dr. Tisdall, or Dr. Cragun.

Juvederm is FDA approved for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds). It consists of hyaluronic acid which is a natural component of skin and also contains a numbing medicine that dramatically improves the comfort of the procedure.

Juvederm Ultra XC is administered as an injection to restore youthful and natural contours to areas of volume loss like the cheeks, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and lips. It results in a very natural, soft, immediate correction that everyone will notice, but no one will know. Results are immediate and can last up to 1 year.

Voluma XC is the first FDA approved HA to add additional volume to the mid face. “Renew your Ogee curve” (the Ogee Curve is a three-dimensional curve in the shape of an ‘S’ that is naturally present in the youthful midface or cheek area. This curve flattens with aging.

How does Voluma XC make me look more youthful?

Replacing lost volume in one’s midface to recreate this curve restores a more youthful appearance.). Voluma XC is used to replace lost volume in the cheeks. Improving the volume here can help lift and reduce the appearance of nasal-labial folds and jowls. Improving the volume in the midface will improve the global youthful appearance of the face.

JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC softens moderate to severe facial lines and wrinkles to create a smoother appearance.

Over time, your skin loses elasticity, which contributes to moderate to severe parentheses lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth. While serums and creams work on the skin’s surface, JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC adds volume to smooth these lines and folds, to help give you the subtle, long-lasting results you want. JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC softens moderate to severe parentheses lines and wrinkles by adding volume to the lines and wrinkles around your nose and mouth to produce subtle and long-lasting results for up to 18 months.

JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC is tailored to add subtle volume to the lips and smooth the appearance of vertical lip lines.

  • 80% (98/123) of people treated experienced improved satisfaction with their lips 1 year later.
  • 75% (92/123) of people treated experienced improved satisfaction with their vertical lip lines 1 year later.
  • When treated again after 1 year, patients needed less product to achieve their results.

Volux XC is the first and only FDA approved hyaluronic acid filler for jawline definition. It is the only non-surgical option for restoring volume and definition in the jawline. Our Dermatologists find that it helps define the jawline in both male and female patients, provides a lifting and contouring effect to the lower face, and sculpts the patient’s profile of the chin and jawline.

Let’s face it, no one wants to be the person on the street with a muffin top, but all too often, even diet and exercise aren’t enough to help you rid yourself of the extra fat. CoolSculpting® is the coolest, most innovative, non-surgical way to lose those annoying bumps and bulges of stubborn fat. This revolutionary technology targets and cools unwanted fat cells in the selected area to induce a noticeable, natural-looking reduction in fat bulges.

Unlike most other methods of fat reduction, such as liposuction, CoolSculpting involves NO needles, NO surgery, and NO downtime. Patients often spend procedure time reading, working on their laptops, or simply relaxing.

Schedule a Consultation

CoolSculpting® is safe and effective

CoolSculpting is a safe, FDA-cleared and proven fat reduction treatment. Results look natural and can be seen as early as three weeks following treatment, with the most dramatic results after one to three months. The treatment will not change who you are, but it will help you look and feel your very best by reducing fat and bulges that may make you feel self-conscious and inhibit you from living the life you want.

Call us today to find out if CoolSculpting is right for you or schedule a consultation - 210-714-5668.

What kind of results can I expect?

Many patients are satisfied after one treatment. However, during your consultation, we can discuss a treatment plan that will meet your specific treatment needs.

What happens during treatment?

To initiate the treatment we will position the device on your body. The device will then draw the fat up between two cooling panels. The sensation is a firm pull and pressure – enough of a pull to ensure the selected tissue will be cooled most efficiently. An hour or so later, depending on your needs, you’re done.

Can I return to normal activities after the procedure?

CoolSculpting is a completely non-surgical fat reduction treatment, so you can typically return to normal activities immediately. Some patients experience redness, minor bruising, tingling, numbness or discomfort in the treated area, but this is temporary and will resolve completely. Often times, patients return to work when the session is over.

When will I see results?

You may start to see changes as quickly as three weeks after your treatment, and will experience the most dramatic results after one to three months. Your body is still flushing fat cells and will continue doing so for up to four to six months after treatment.

Are the results permanent?

During treatment, the treated fat cells are eliminated. As long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle, long-term results should remain stable.

How do I get started?

Call us today at 210-714-5668 to set up your free consultation to talk about CoolSculpting and or other effective body contouring procedures. We’ll see if you’re a good candidate for the procedure and work with you to develop a treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ultherapy?

Ultherapy is a safe, non-surgical ultrasound treatment that counteracts the effects of time and gravity on your skin. Ultherapy uses the body's own regenerative response to gently and gradually lift skin on the eyebrow, under the chin and on the neck, and smooth lines and wrinkles on the décolletage.

What is unique about Ultherapy?

Ultherapy is the only non-invasive skin tightening treatment cleared by the FDA to actually lift skin. Ultherapy is also the only cosmetic procedure to use ultrasound imaging, which allows practitioners to see the layers of tissue targeted during the treatment to ensure the energy is deposited where it will be most beneficial. With the addition of the new Ultherapy® Decolletage Treatment, Ultherapy is also the only non-invasive procedure specifically indicated by the FDA to improve lines and wrinkles on the chest.

Can Ultherapy replace a facelift?

Ultherapy treats the deep foundational layer addressed in cosmetic surgery, but won't duplicate the results of a facelift. Ultherapy is a great alternative, however, especially for those not ready for surgery or for patients looking to extend the effects of cosmetic surgery.

How does Ultherapy differ from laser treatments?

Ultherapy uses sound energy - tried-and-true ultrasound - which has unique properties allowing it to bypass the surface of the skin to treat depths not matched by any other non-invasive cosmetic device. The Ultherapy ultrasound stimulates collagen production in the skin's foundation, resulting in a clinically significant skin lift over 2-3 months. Lasers rely on light energy, which cannot reach deeper skin layers at an optimal temperature, so laser treatments typically only treat superficial skin and are not FDA-cleared to lift skin. Since the two technologies often treat different types of skin issues, they're actually very compatible.

How does Ultherapy stimulate the creation of collagen?

Ultherapy deposits focused ultrasound energy deep beneath the skin at the optimal temperature for collagen regeneration. The treatment jumpstarts a natural process, known as neocollagenesis, to produce fresh, new collagen. Ultherapy doesn't involve any creams, fillers or toxins; it relies on your body's own collagen-building process for natural, noticeable results.

How long does an Ultherapy® treatment take?

The length of the skin tightening treatment will depend on the area being treated and your individual treatment plan. A face and neck procedure typically takes 60-90 minutes, while a chest treatment takes approximately 30 minutes.

Will I need to take time off?

With Ultherapy, there is no downtime. After your procedure, you can resume your normal activities immediately, without having to follow any special post-treatment measures.

What does the Ultherapy® treatment feel like?

As the ultrasound energy is delivered, you will feel tiny amounts of energy being deposited to precise depths, indicating that the collagen-building process has been initiated. Comfort levels vary from person to person, but the sensation only lasts while the ultrasound energy is being delivered.

When will I see results? How long do they last?

After your Ultherapy® Treatment, you may see some initial effect, but the ultimate results will take place over 2-3 months, as your body naturally regenerates collagen. Since the procedure stimulates your own collagen production, how long the results last really depends on you. The treatment produces new collagen on the inside, but your natural aging process will dictate how long that translates into visible results on the outside.

How many Ultherapy® treatments will I need?

Most patients only need one treatment. However, based on the degree of skin laxity, the biological response to ultrasound energy and the individual's collagen-building process, some patients benefit from additional treatments. Because skin continues to age, future touch-up treatments can help patients keep pace with the body's natural aging process.

Are there any side effects?

The skin might appear flushed at first, but the redness should disappear within a few hours. Some patients experience slight swelling, tingling, or tenderness to the touch, but these are temporary in nature. Other, less common post-procedural effects may include temporary bruising or numbness on small areas of skin. As with any medical procedure, there is the possibility for other rare effects, which your practitioner will review with you. For full product and safety information, visit  ultherapy.com/IFU

Is Ultherapy safe?

The FDA-cleared Ultherapy® procedure has been used safely in over 350,000 treatments worldwide. Ultrasound energy has been used safely in the medical field for more than 50 years. In addition, every Ultherapy practitioner receives extensive procedural training.

Who is a good candidate for Ultherapy?

A good Ultherapy candidate has a mild to moderate skin laxity where the skin begins to feel and look less firm. Examples include a lowered eyebrow line, loose skin on the neck, sagging under the chin, and lines or wrinkles on the chest. Of course, the best way to find out if you're an Ultherapy candidate is to consult with a practitioner.

Kybella

My visit with this office was amazing. They were very competent, very nice and very knowledgeable. I will definitely be back...

M.R.

Expertise

KYBELLA® is a prescription medicine used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called “double chin.”

Are you bothered by the fullness of your chin? What causes submental fullness?

Submental fullness due to fat beneath the chin can impact a broad range of both male and female adults. Some possible causes are aging, weight gain, and genetics.

How does KYBELLA® work?

When injected into the fat beneath your chin, KYBELLA® destroys fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. Fat cleared from the treatment area is processed through your body’s natural metabolism.

How many treatment sessions will I need?

During your consultation, Dr. Tisdall or Dr. Miller will help determine how many treatment sessions you need based on the amount and distribution of your submental fat and your personal treatment goals. Up to 6 treatments may be administered, spaced no less than 1 month apart.

How is KYBELLA® administered?

KYBELLA® is given during an in-office visit. The injection process may take 15 to 20 minutes. Dr. Miller or Dr. Tisdall will give you a series of injections into the fat under your chin at each treatment session.

What can I expect after my treatment session?

For most patients, downtime occurred most commonly after the first treatment session. You should be able to resume your normal daily activities, but are likely to have swelling, so keep your social plans and work commitments in mind when scheduling your treatment. After treatment, apply ice or a cold pack to the treatment area for 10 to 15 minutes, as needed.

KYBELLA® may be right for you if:

* You’re bothered by fat under the chin, also known as submental fullness

* You don’t want surgery

* You feel the condition makes you look older or heavier than you actually are

* You eat well and exercise, but submental fullness does not go away

Hair Loss

Caring

“Dermatology San Antonio is pleased to introduce our latest in-office treatment for hair loss.”

Hair loss can be an embarrassing issue. Male and female pattern hair loss is a genetic problem that can leave you feeling helpless. Treatment options, like prescription drugs, are often partially effective and carry the potential for unwanted side effects. Surgical hair restoration can be expensive and does not treat the underlying medical problems.

Now there is an effective and affordable way for you to improve your hair density without surgery or harmful side effects.

This Hair Loss Treatment:

  • Increases blood supply to the follicle
  • Increases shaft size (thickness)
  • Triggers and maintains the growth phase
  • Controls hair growth cycle
  • Decreases hair loss

How Does It Work?

Platelets contain healing growth factors. Those growth factors are like signal callers that give instructions to your tissue to regenerate and multiply. This has led different fields of medicine to utilize them for wound healing to speed up recovery time and regrow healthier, stronger tissue. Now doctors have discovered new benefits for hair thickening and regrowth. With this treatment, there is a reverse effect to the miniaturization of the hair follicle, jump starting dormant hair back into the growth stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I am a good candidate?

Contact Dermatology San Antonio to schedule an appointment for a proper diagnosis and to create a treatment plan.

How many treatments are required?

Treatment will vary based on your need. Your treatment plan may consist of a number of treatments spaced 1 month apart. After your initial treatment, it is usually suggested to do maintenance treatments 2-4 times per year.

How long does the treatment take?

This hair loss treatment is considered a “lunchtime” treatment, as it can be completed within about 20 minutes.

Does the procedure hurt?

There may be some sensitivity. However, physicians usually utilize effective anesthetic solutions, such as cold ambient air or a topical analgesic to minimize any potential discomfort. Talk to your physicians about the right option for you.

Is there any recovery time?

There is no downtime or a long recovery process. You may take a warm shower the evening of the treatment. In addition, it is advised to avoid using any harsh dyes or chemicals on your hair for 48 hours.

Can this restorative treatment cure baldness?

No, this hair loss treatment is not a cure for baldness (Androgenic Alopecia). The genetic medical problem will always remain. However, there is evidence that regular treatments can significantly slow down the effects of Androgenic Alopecia and works to increase hair density.

PDT/Bluelight

My visit with this office was amazing. They were very competent, very nice and very knowledgeable. I will definitely be back...

M.R.

Expertise

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment performed in the office using a topical photo-sensitizer called Levulan, or aminolevulinic acid (ALA) and a specific blue light. ALA is activated by the blue light to treat actinic keratoses and acne. Actinic keratoses(AK) are precancerous lesions that can evolve into squamous cell skin cancer (SCC) over time.

The goal of ALA-PDT is to reduce the number of AKs and thus reduce the risk of developing SCC. Treatment alternatives include topical chemotherapy and immune-modulating regimens. When you schedule an apt to discuss your AKs we will determine whether ALA-PDT or another treatment option is right for you. ALA-PDT is covered by many insurance carriers and our office will determine your benefits if you decide on this treatment.

One major advantage of ALA-PDT is many patients see an improvement in their skin tone and texture and get a cosmetic benefit from the procedure in addition to treating their AKs. Generally 2-3 monthly Photodynamic Therapy/Bluelight treatments are performed.

This treatment can also be used to improve acne. The blue light alone kills the bacteria, P.acnes, that contributes to acne. Generally weekly treatments for 6 weeks are done. When ALA is added to the blue light (ALA_PDT) then the oil glands are treated in addition to the P.acnes and more improvement can be seen. There can be some redness and inflammation from the combined treatment so this is performed monthly for three treatments. This treatment is not covered by insurance for the treatment of acne but is a good alternative to patients who have not had success with standard therapies.

About the Photodynamic Therapy/Bluelight Treatment Procedure

Your skin will be cleansed. The ALA or Levulan is then applied to the skin and allowed to incubate painlessly for about 60-90 minutes. The ALA is preferentially absorbed by the AKs and oil glands. A specific blue light is then used to activate the ALA that has been absorbed thus directly treating the AK or oil gland that is contributing to acne. This blue light exposure lasts 16 minutes during which you may experience mild to moderate stinging. You should expect mild to moderate redness and scaling that can persist for 3-7 days.

Acne Scar Treatment

My visit with this office was amazing. They were very competent, very nice and very knowledgeable. I will definitely be back...

M.R.

Superb

Marks left by acne vary. Acne can leave areas of discoloration. These are generally flat red to pink or tan areas. Generally these areas will fade with time often leaving minimal marks behind. Although the flat brown marks of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) tend to fade on their own there are options that can hasten the fading process. Sun protection is imperative as sun exposure will tend to darken these brown areas. A variety of fade creams and superficial peels can help fade brown areas as well. Our aesthetician can discuss these treatments with you.

Schedule a Consultation

Red to pink flat marks left by acne will also generally fade but for some patients can take a year or more. These marks can turn brown so, again, sun protection while these areas are healing is very important to minimize the brown color that develops as the red and pink areas heal. The darker the skin tone the more important sun protection is. There are topical creams and laser treatments that can quicken the fading process of these flat red or pink areas.

The laser treatment used for red to pink areas in our office is called an AFT or IPL. This laser does not create a wound so there is minimal to no downtime. It is usually preformed as three monthly treatments to accelerate the fading of red to pink areas. This procedure is performed by our clinic aesthetician.

Discoloration is one problem. True scarring is another and it comes in different shapes and sizes. Acne scars are generally more than discoloration. They may be discolored but are also either depressed or elevated compared to the surrounding skin. Again the discoloration will fade but the depression or elevation will stay. These scars can remodel and improve some on their own over the course of about a year but will not disappear. Topical retinoids used to manage acne can aid this natural remodeling process.

The different types of acne scars include boxcar, icepick, rolling, atrophic, and keloid scars. Keloidal scars are raised firm areas that can improve with massage, topical silicone dressings, and steroid injections into the scar. Icepick scarring (small focal indents) may respond to focal peels and laser treatment. Boxcar scarring looks like the scar from chickenpox, and can be surgically removed with a punch technique. If there are many boxcar scars, then laser resurfacing can be helpful. Rolling scars do not have sharp edges but are depressions in the skin. These can respond to subcision, filler, and laser resurfacing.

We use the ActiveFX CO2 fractional laser to perform laser resurfacing for acne scarring. This laser is ablative, in that it creates a wound and deeply heats the skin in a fractional way. The fractional technology allows for more aggressive treatment of the scars with reduced downtime and faster healing. This treatment stimulates collagen production and scar remodeling. The wound generally heals in 3-5 days. Two to three treatments are performed. Improvement in the scars is gradual over several months following the treatment. This treatment is performed by one of our physicians.

We also use microneedling as an alternative to CO2 resurfacing to treat acne scars. Microneedling is an innovative yet simple technique that uses tiny needles rather than the heat of a laser to stimulate collagen production and scar remodeling. This treatment is performed every 1-3 months for a series of 3-6 treatments.

The important thing to know about acne scar treatment is that no treatment will erase your scars. We have a variety of treatments that can be used to improve the appearance of the scars but we cannot eliminate them. Generally multiple treatments are required and scar treatment is a process. We do not perform any active scar treatment within 6 months of finishing a course of Accutane or isotretinoin. However, once this window passes we can start to work on the scars.

The process of scar treatment begins with a consultation with one of our physicians to 1) manage your existing acne and prevent further scarring, 2) evaluate whether you have discoloration, scars or both and what type of scars you have, and 3) discuss treatment options.

Superb

Sculptra Aesthetic is composed of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). It is a biocompatible (does not harm the body), biodegradable (able to be broken down by the body) material. lt has been used safely for many years in surgical products.

Sculptra Aesthetic is not a filler. It is a biostimulator that stimulates your own collagen to fill in areas of volume loss. Sculptra Aesthetic offers a unique, non-surgical option to re-volumize the face to restore more youthful fullness and proportions. Sculptra Aesthetic is FDA approved for the treatment of shallow to deep nasolabial folds and other facial contour deficiencies. It can be used to treat the cheeks, temples, nasolabial folds(smile lines), lateral cheek, marionette area and chin. Generally it is not used to address a specific area individually, rather, it is used to globally address facial proportions and volume to give a very natural correction. It is not used to treat the lips.

Sculptra Aesthetic is administered as an injection. Sculptra Aesthetic Treatments are performed once a month for 3 months. Results are not immediate, rather gradually emerge over about 7-9 months. The result can last 2 years or more. Since the correction results from your own collagen production and the face is addressed as a whole, the result is a very soft, natural correction. Your treatment will be administered by our expert injectors: Dr. Miller, Dr. Tisdall or Dr. Cragun.

Laser resurfacing can dramatically improve many of the signs of aging including skin laxity, sun spots, and textural irregularities. Fractional resurfacing is the latest technology to dramatically reduce downtime and increase the safety of a laser resurfacing procedure.

How quickly does a laser resurfacing treatment work?

With just one treatment, the UltraPulse fractional CO2 laser can deliver long lasting results for photoaging. This revolutionary laser treats just a fraction of the skin. This leaves many minute bridges of untreated skin resulting in quicker healing and reduced downtime. At the same time the UltraPulse is a very powerful laser which deeply heats the skin stimulating new collagen production and tightening.

The laser is used with the ActiveFx setting to address fine lines, textural irregularities and sun spots. The DeepFX setting is used to address deeper lines and acne scars. ActiveFx and DeepFx treatments are combined for some areas during the same treatment session to deliver TotalFx treatment. The physicians at Dermatology San Antonio can customize a laser resurfacing treatment to help you reach your goals.

After a treatment there will be 2-5 days of downtime while the skin heals from the treatment. Sunspots are gone immediately. Skin tightening and improvement in lines and scars will gradually emerge over 6-9 months as the body produces new collagen. A Laser Resurfacing Treatment of acne scarring generally requires 2-3 treatments.  Drs. Cragun will administer your treatment.

KTP Laser Treatment

M.R.

Expertise

The Dermatologists at Dermatology San Antonio offer KTP Laser Treatment. KTP Laser Treatments are used to correct vascular lesions on the face and neck. KTP Laser treatments have had proven success effectively treating spider angiomas, prominent vessels (telangiectasias) and sunspots.

Recovery time after a KTP Laser Treatment

Although the downtime after KTP Laser Treatments is minimal and the treatment has been described as comfortable, your dermatologist will have to provide you with a plan, as more than one treatment may be needed for optimal results. It is advised that after a KTP Laser treatment, you should avoid applying makeup for at least six hours. Your skin will be red following a treatment; so many individuals tend to take a half-day off of work to allow for their skins tone to improve. In very rare cases a blister may form following KTP Laser Treatments. If you experience such a side effect, refrain from popping the blister to avoid scaring.

Some San Antonio residents may not benefit from KTP Laser treatments. It is important that you talk to your doctor to make sure that you receive the treatment that you will benefit from. Individuals with darker skin or tanned skin might not be good candidates for KTP Laser Treatment. During your appointment, one of our Dermatologists will be able to provide information on what laser treatments would be most appropriate for you. Make your appointment to learn more about KTP Laser Treatments in our San Antonio office.

Sclerotherapy

My visit with this office was amazing. They were very competent, very nice and very knowledgeable. I will definitely be back...

Expertise

Dermatology San Antonio treats spider veins with Sclerotherapy. Spider veins are veins that appear as tiny networks of red, blue, or purple lines that usually appear on the thighs, calves, and ankles. When they accumulate, spider veins can become quite noticeable. In some patients, these clusters of veins become noticeable at a young age. For others, the veins may not become obvious until much later in life.

A number of factors contribute to the development of spider veins in the legs including heredity, hormonal shifts, occupations or activities that require prolonged sitting or standing, pregnancy, and weight fluctuation. Women are two to three times more likely to develop varicose veins than men. Spider veins usually do not create any medical problems, however, many of our patients seek treatment of their spider veins to enhance the aesthetic appearance of their legs.

Schedule a Consultation

Sclerotherapy for the Treatment of Spider Veins

Spider veins on the legs can be treated in a variety of ways depending on their size and location. At Dermatology San Antonio we use a mild sclerosant solution to treat red to purple spider veins on the legs. This involves the injection of a solution into the vein which affects the internal lining of the vein causing it to close as it heals from the treatment resulting in elimination of the vein.

The solution chosen by Dr. Miller and Dr. Tisdall was selected for its maximum effectiveness and minimal discomfort. Depending on the number and severity of spider veins, 2-3 Sclerotherapy sessions may be needed. Sclerotherapy treatments itself usually takes approximately 20 minutes. This procedure is performed by our physicians.
